This is a biographical novel telling the adventures of an African-American boy's journey to America and his life as a slave. It also tells about America in the time-period that we would most like to forget. This book made me feel as if I knew Amos; like I was always right beside him. It seems as if I have read a few books about this time-period recently, not just Newberys.

Laura - you go, girl! I am a librarian in Minnesota and just heard about your goal to read all the Newbery books. Congratulations and best wishes. What a great idea. I hope you are having fun. The best part of doing something like this is reading books just because they are on the list that you probably wouldn't have picked up otherwise, and finding out how much you really like them. That's how I felt about the Trumpeter of Krakow. Have fun finding the surprises!
