The Great Gilly Hopkins

This book is unlike most children's books because you do not start out by liking the main character.  Galadriel (Gilly) is annoying, bratty, rude and mean, but her life as a foster child is to blame.  As Gilly is impacted by a new foster "family," you learn about Gilly and like her both because she changes and because you understand her.  I didn't like the ending of this book, but life doesn't always have a happy ending.  And books are life, at least to me.
And I am SUPER excited to meet Katherine Paterson at ALA; talk about a superstar author!
