The Cardturner

This is for Sam B from Cincinnati, who was very unhappy with my low ranking of Louis Sachar's Newbery winner, Holes.  Sam, I gave Louis another chance and found a great book.  I read The Card Turner in about 48 hours; it is the kind of book you don't want to put down.  I liked reading about the game of bridge in this story, and I hope to learn how to play.  Bridge is becoming so scarcely know that I had barely even heard of the game (my grandparents play), but now that I know it exists, I want to play.  Anyways, this was a great book and I think that it has a fairly good chance at being the Newbery.  It is SO hard to eliminate any!!!

Rating:  *****

Also (this has nothing to do with the book), I am in the car driving to DC with my family for ALA.

  1. Laura,
I'm going to be at the ALA exhibition hall on Sunday. My pass is only good for the exhibition hall due to tight family finances. I'm hoping to meet you.

Thank you for the inspiration you continue to be in my life.

    Warmly,

  2. You can start learning bridge when you get here. We will have to find a fourth to join us because I know this isn't your mom's "cup of tea".

  3. Margo J.,
I hope to see you on Sunday! If I wasn't a VIP, I would probably go just to the exhibition hall, but the ALA board members are very nice.

    Granddad,
Maybe Aunt Carrie? I can't wait to learn!

  4. Yeah Laura - I'm glad you liked it! Louis Sachar is so cool, but I've heard he isn't the greatest public speaker. Unlike Rebecca Stead - wasn't her speech amazing? -Sam B. from Cincinnati
