Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice

"Mine was the first call for justice, and a loud one."

Because I am a girl who likes award winning books, it should be no surprise that I LOVED this book.  Some of its awards are:  Newbery Honor Book, The Robert F. Sibert Honor Book, National Book Award Winner, Excellence in Young Adult Nonfiction Finalist and Jane Addams Children's Book Award.  The true story of Claudette Colvin's life, her courageous actions that sparked the bus boycott and the impact it had on her life was amazing.  You felt like you were hearing the story right from Claudette as it was happening.  I was inspired by Claudette's ability to stand up for her rights and change the world.  And I am very grateful to Phillip Hoose for his dedication to making sure that Claudette's story got told.  I recommend this book to all kids because we all need to be thinking about our responsibilities in making the world a better place like Claudette did.

  1. Never to early to start being a responsible citizen. I am so glad you are spreading the "word".

  2. I'm so glad you wrote about this book. I'm a librarian in an elementary school in Athen, Georgia, and I recently purchased this book for our media center. I was so inspired by Claudette' story when I read it. I, too, am glad that Phillip Hoose told this story. Claudette did a huge thing (as big as what Rosa Parks did), and she hardly got any credit for it. I'm glad she's finally getting the credit. I hope many more children (and adults) read this book, too.

  3. Grandmom,
Do you want me to send this book with my mom? I have a signed copy!!!

    Andy,
I am glad that you got it for your library. You might also want to get One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia for a VERY different view on civil rights issues. Thanks for reading my blog?

  4. Laura I just finished the book. It is a powerful story about a powerful time. We all should be as brave as Claudette. If nothing else but to support with all our efforts the immigrants, gays and other americans who are being denied their constitutional rights. A great book to set an example to all young readers.
