Happy Anniversary, To Kill a Mockingbird

Today is the 50th anniversary of To Kill a Mockingbird!  I read To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time last year.  I am sure I will read it over and over.  After reading it I am newly aware how often it is referenced in other books; I can see why.  This book impacts you as a reader and Atticus and Scout will stay with me.  People disagree about if this is a book children should read. I am glad I did and know I will read it in new ways as I get older.
Rating:  Off the charts!!!

  1. Laura, I stumbled upon your blog today, and I am so glad that I did. You are an inspiration! As an elementary librarian, I admire and share your passion for reading. I look forward to reading your reviews and using them to build my library's collection.

Before I became a librarian, I was a high school English teacher for eleven years. I taught TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD every year, so that means that I have read it at least twelve times (the first time was as a 10th grade student). I find something new every time I read this amazing work, and it is my all time favorite book. I think it's fitting that I discovered your blog on this day, the 50th birthday of TKAM. I love how you said you will read it "in new ways" as you get older. I hope that you do. Atticus, Scout, Jem, Tom Robinson, and Boo will have new lessons to share every time you venture into the world of Maycomb. Enjoy your summer and happy reading!

  3. Laura, I came across your blog today. I am an author of books for young people and I have not read all of the Newbery winners! What an inspiration you are for others -- young and old. TKAM is such a fabulous read and the characters absolutely believable. I grew up in the South (the Appalachian region of Kentucky). I hope you will consider reading my book, To Come and Go Like Magic, set in Kentucky in the 1970s about a young girl who yearns to leave the hills and see the world. Keep reading and writing!
