This is book one of the fantastic His Dark Materials trilogy, I am just finishing now and it is wonderful. Philip Puleman's series is in the fantasy genre, but it has perks that might belong in science fiction if there were not talking bears and daemons in the story. I liked how he created a world so different from the one we live in and yet so similar. And I found the end of the book really intriguing, making me want to read on and learn what happens to Lyra. I think that this trilogy would be great for lovers of science fiction and anyone who wants to escape into a different world.
Stay tuned for my reviews of the rest of the trilogy.

Glad to see your review - these books are great. I read them one after another, and later listened to the audio version which is also very good.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had a daemon!
This is so exciting, Laura - these are my favorite books in the world. Just wait, they get better! I can't wait to see what you have to say about the other two!

I have read NONE of these books yet. Thanks for giving your input on this one.
ReplyDeleteDo you think you'd like to write fantasy? Every now and then I get the urge to create a whole new world in my writing but I tend to get over that quickly!
I LOVE these books so much. I just started the last one and it is almost as good as the first (I always like the original better than the sequel). Having a daemon would be cool, but I think I like living in this world better. And I do like to write fantasy, but not as much as other things.

The Golden Compass is definitely my favorite book! I wish I had a daemon, too. Come to think about it, though, it would probably be a wolf!
