I am very excited that the Hussey-Mayfield Library in Zionsville will be holding a Mock Newbery event for kids in grades 3-8 this year. I even get to host it!

The John Newbery Medal is a literary award given by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The award is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. To win:
• The book must be published in English in the United States during 2010.
• The author must be a citizen or resident of the United States.
• The book must be considered for its theme, presentation (clarity, accuracy and organization), plot, characters, setting, and style.
• The book must be for children no older than 14.
• The book must contribute to literature.

To hold our own Mock Newbery we will read great books published this year and then meet to vote for the book we think should win the Newbery Medal. It will be fun to see if we pick the same winner as the real committee. The voting day isn't until December 12th, so there is PLENTY of time to read books to participate.

On August 5th, from 7 to 8 PM, we are going to have a time where you can learn more about the Newbery and our Mock Newbery. Sign up now and join the fun! I will have great prizes to share for those who attend.

If you want to get started reading now, you can check out my Mock Newbery List to start. Please send additional suggestions to lauramitolife@gmail.com. You don't have to live in Zionsville to participate (I don't) so, please tell all the kids you know in 3rd-8th grade!
